My Husband’s Wife

My Husband’s Wife by Jane Corry

So I was checking this book into the library and as I flipped through the pages to see if there was any damage, I read a bit and then of course had to check it out myself.

bookreaddon'tneedsleepneedanswers

So the book is told in two points of views. It starts in 2000, when Lily and Ed MacDonald have just married. Lily is a solicitor with a past she longs to run far away from, remaking herself.

New me!

Ed is an artist that seemed romantic and kind-but controlling, narcissist, and in love with another woman.

They are very, very unhappy.

Guy you suck!

And to make things worse Lily’s job moves her to working with criminals as she goes to do an appeal for a Joe Thomas, convicted for murdering his girlfriend. Lily is working long hours, which annoys Ed, and to make things even worse- Lily feels something for this enigmatic man.

colonelhastingsgoodlord

Four doors down lives nine-year old Carla Cavoletti and her mother. Her mother is tiny and beautiful and a mistress to Larry. They moved from Italy to get away from something and Carla hates being here. All the kids pick on her, she is different, and she has no friends.

One day she comes home early, injured, and her mother is out. The teacher is going to force her to go back when Lily comes home and agrees to watch her. Carla loves spending time with Lily and Ed-Lily who is kind and helpful and Ed who sketches her, making her feel beautiful and a star.

Soon every Sunday she is staying with them, as her mother works on the weekend. Lily likes having her there, a child to buffer the fights between her and Ed and take their minds of their woes.

But things change when Lily finds out a horrible secret her husband has kept from her-and when she stumbles and reveals another, Carla and her mother’s life changes too.

15 years later Carla returns to England a beautiful, svelte, law student. She and her mother have been living under the thumb of her grandfather and she has returned to England to make Larry, Lily, and Ed pay for what became of her life.

She inserts herself into the MacDonald life and intends to turn it all on its head.

The Wife

The Wife: A Novel by Alafair Burke

Thoughts Before Reading:

So I am a librarian:

And one of my jobs is to process the new books and finish them to be added to the library. This is dangerous as you know I love reading, and I get first look at everything new.

So as you know, being a book lover I just can’t resist checking the new things out. This was one of them. As I was working on it, I read the synopsis on the jacket and just had to read it.

Plot Synopsis:

Angela met Jason Powell, a brilliant economics professor, while catering a party in the Hamptons. For him it was love at first sight and nothing could keep him from courting her. Angela never understood why he was interested, but this marriage gave her a chance to reboot her life and move her and her son out of her parent’s house.

Six year later: Jason, Angela, and her son are still a family but Jason is hardly ever home. He is now the author of a best-selling, has a huge media footprint, started his own consulting firm, and has become a cultural lightening rod.

For Angela, ever day is a resurrection of her old fears-the fear that her anonymity will be destroyed and that her dark past she has tried so hard to keep secret will once again become front page news.

No!!

When a college intern is accusing Jason of sexual harassment, both Jason and Rachel think of it as nothing more than a love-sick student.

But when a women from one of the company’s that Jason consults for accuses him of rape and looks to have proof, Angela starts to wonder if these women are lying, and does she know who the man she married?

Thoughts After Reading:

It was okay.

ugh

The beginning and middle were really good and a page turner

But the end fell flat for me. It was a good twist but at the same time it weakened the whole book.

Little Betty & Veronica: The Buried Treasure Mystery

This comes from Betty and Veronica Double Digest No. 96. The story is called Little Betty and Veronica & the Buried Treasure, but I’m not sure why. It isn’t really about them, but about Archie. Why didn’t they just call it Little Archie & the Buried Treasure?

Sew Deadly

SewDeadly

Sew Deadly (A Southern Sewing Circle #1) by Elizabeth Lynn Casey

Victoria “Tori” Sinclair has just moved from Chicago to small town Sweet Briar, South Carolina to be the town’s new librarian.

change

It is a huge change for her, but after her last relationship tanked, her fiancé cheating on her during their engagement party, she needed to get out and far away.

moveon

Tori is eager to run her own library, being full of ideas,

but she is definitely going to be faced with some serious issues. She is from the North (a Yankee), was not born in Sweet Briar, and has just ousted one of the town’s favorite people when she was hired to become the new librarian.

badfeeling

Tori visits with some of the town folk, Leona a more recent addition to the town and the antique shop owner; and Georgina the mayor. While Georgina and Tori are talking, they discuss sewing, and Tori is invited to join the sewing circle. Seems like things are going great.

fantastic

But not quite. Someone is sabotaging her, stealing the lightbulbs on her porch, giving her a flat, and the former librarian is going around talking smack about her.

While the sewing meeting starts off to a shaky start, the former librarian boycotting; and Tori not bringing a baked good like she is supposed

When she shares her ideas of starting a children’s room in the library, everyone jumps in promising to make dress up clothes for the kids.

Just when things look like they are going up, Tori falls into another pitfall. Her appointment book was swiped and she finds herself unprepared for Mr. Wentworth’s third grade class’ usual appointment of story time and craft. Luckily she manages to think her way out and come up with a butter making idea. As the kids are working hard, Tori talkes to Miles Wentworth, single, tall, dark, and handsome.

The next sewing circle doesn’t go as well as the first. Former librarian Dixie Dunn came and is trying to get everyone against Tori. Luckily the move the conversation to Miles and discuss the sad state of his singlehood since he became a widower, along wit the beauty queen, recently moved back resident, Tiffany Ann. Tiffany Ann was always obsessed with Miles ever since she was 12 and he was her tutor. She doesn’t care about the 13 year difference but promised she would marry him.

After a lot of hard work, Tori has finally cleaned out the storage room set for the new children’s corner. Nina, her assistant, has to leave but Tori is determined to finish cleaning everything for the board meeting and show off where she wants everything to be. As she heads to the dumpster to toss in the final pieces she’s cleaned out, all her plans change. In the dumpster is the body of Tiffany Ann.

StarTrekTheOriginalSeriesHesDeadJim

Now the police investigator stupidly believes that Tori killed her, in her anger of becoming part of a love triangle, no one will talk to her, and Tori has to solve this mystery before whoever kills again and causes her to be run out of town.

Thoughts After Reading:

So I thought this book was pretty good.

likeit

I liked the characters of the book and felt it was interesting. The only thing I don’t like is the way they make the police investigator so incompetent.

Really Mike?

Ugh.

I hate when they do that in mystery novels. Why would they choose Tori when she has no reason to kill Miles? There is no love triangle, no hatred, no revenge, no money, etc.

seriously

There is bound to have been someone else in the town, but instead of making the character intelligent, she makes him like the one in Bloom and Doom, incredibly incompetent.

Blueberry Muffin Murder

BlueberryMuffinMurder

Blueberry Muffin Murder (Hannah Swenson Mystery #3) by Joanne Fluke

This is the third book in the series following Hannah Swenson, ex-English Literature major and now owner of cookie shop, The Cookie Jar, in Lake Eden, Minnesota. She accidentally runs into dead bodies, or people ask her to investigate, causing her to solve crimes before the police even have a smidgen of a clue.

veronicamarsinvestigatesleuth

It’s late February and things are pretty slow. Christmas and News Years? Parties galore and business is booming. With Valentine’s Day, another flurry of activity. But once that’s over it’s dead. Snow, cold, and nothing until Easter.

im_bored_himym

So this year, the city decided to do something different to bring in tourist and boost the economy. This year marked the first annual Lake Eden Winter Carnival.

YayHappy-Success-GIF

The Jordan High School shop class redid old sleighs to give sleigh rides. Hannah’s mother Delores helped the Historical Society create a full-scale replica of the first mayor’s house, Ezekiel Jordan. And of course Hannah, is one of the many people who has a booth for her business.

Lordoftherings LifeisGood

As she is heading out to her shop, a guy attacks her from behind warning her to get against the wall or else she will be killed!!!!

Ahh-1

It turns out to be an old friend, Greg Canfield. Greg had moved back a few years ago and opened an import store at the Tri-County Mall. His store closed down recently, and after he sold his house he moved in with his grandmother (who lives in the same condo building as Hannah). He was out that morning and thought he’d pull a prank on his old pal. Greg leaves to get back to his stock trading, he’s making a bundle on the company Redlines and Hannah heads over to her shop.

cookies

Hannah’s friend Lisa, has recently become her partner, and has been busy at work baking and dressing the window for the Winter Carnival.

It turns out that the Winter Carnival is going to bring much more to town. Connie MacIntyre, the star of the hit cooking show Cooking With Connie Mac, has come to town. She has numerous books, a string of kitchen boutique stores, a monthly magazine, etc.

With Connie Mac, comes Janie Burkholtz, Connie’s personal assistant, and Hannah’s sister Andrea’s very best friend. Looks like the Winter Carnival is going to be loads of fun.

wrong

The Mayor asks Hannah to drive Connie Mac around town and Hannah agrees as she figures it will be fun.

thiswillbeeasy

Andrea comes over to speak to Hannah and when she hears all about Hannah giving the tour, and of course invites herself along. Hannah agrees as she thinks it will make a boring situation more interesting.

The girls reach the inn where Connie Mac is staying and meet a grade-A jerk.

2013-11-27-bradpitt friends ugh slap face stupid

She is rude, cruel and picky about how everything has to be. From her salad to pressing of her clothes, nothing is ever quite right and must have a thousand details done to it.

jerk-gif

The first stop is the library, where Connie will be signing her cookbooks, along with raising awareness for the library and the programs offered there. However, Connie doesn’t care about the library, all she wants is the money and publicity and she sure doesn’t want to be at the back of the building, but in the lobby.

Then she decides the best sleigh shouldn’t be used for the Winter Royalty, but what she should ride in on.

2013-11-27-bradpitt friends ugh slap face stupid

I guess that is correct, as she is a royal pain.

Sorry, had to do it.

Sorry, had to do it.

After they iron out that detail they go on to the school kitchen to talk about the big banquet they are going to have. Connie manipulates people to get what she wants, and succeeds every time. She wants her cake to be on the pedestals reserved for the crown of the Winter Prince & Princess. Edna, the school cook, is very against it, until Connie promises to gift them a dinner set for 200, including glassware, silver, and tablecloths.

eyebrowsbowchickawowwow

Hannah can see right through everything and thinks Connie is just plan rude. She also thinks that her show is nothing special, as it seems presentation heavy over tasty.

Hannah leaves Andrea with Connie and heads back to the The Cookie Jar. There she makes some blueberry muffins, using frozen berries instead of real ones as Minnesota in February, there is no way she is getting fresh. That’s one great thing about living on the West Coast, fresh fruit all year long.

That afternoon Hannah receives a frantic call from Janie. It turns out that the van carrying Connie Mac’s Winter Carnival Cake was ruined when the car went into a ditch. And she needs a place to to cook a replacement. They want to use The Cookie Jar.

Its-Not-Going-to-Happen-Mean-Girls

Hannah does not want Connie Mac in her kitchen, and suggests other places; but it turns out none are available, the only place it can happen in is Hannah’s.

thisisbad

Against her better judgement, Hannah agrees.

can'tbelievethisishappening

Besides cooking there, Norman will be taking Connie Mac’s picture as well. So it can be immortalized forever that Connie Mac cooked at the Cookie Jar.

well that's just great anchorman

That night as everyone is bringing stuff in for Connie Mac, Hannah tells Lisa to take the morning off. Before Hannah leaves, she lets Janie know that there are blueberry muffins in the pantry. Janie wants some, but Connie Mac has forbidden her to have sweets as she “needs to lose 20 pounds”. She doesn’t really need to, but Connie is rude and a jerk.

Norman and Hannah both leave and Norman is just as angry at Connie as Hannah. Connie is clearly super at making enemies. You all know what that means.

Murder

Norman invites Hannah to dinner, but she refuses, wanting to rest. Unfortunately, Bill is working late, and since Janie can no longer meet her and with Andrea all alone; Hannah is convinced to go out. It turns out Bill does come and brings Mike. The perfect set-up.

eyebrowsbowchickawowwow

The next day Hannah goes to her shop and finds it a huge mess.

What'sHappening?BigBangTheory

The door is open. Flour is everywhere! Mixing bowls are filled with dry batter. Sticky spoons, beaters, and other utensils spatter the kitchen. Burning cake in the oven!

tumblr_lxwyyylTwK1qgj4zoo1_250

Her shop is a total mess and could have burnt to the ground!!!! What is Connie Mac’s deal? How could she have done this?!!!

As Hannah begins cleaning, she spots Connie’s handbag. Along with her coat. Janie was gone, her car, coat, etc. So….

Uh-oh-dexter-9352138-275-155

Connie must never have left. As Hannah looks in the store she finds her. Dead by a blow to the head, mid muffin bite.

StarTrekTheOriginalSeriesHesDeadJim

And a blow on the back of a head means only one thing:

Murder

Mike and Bill come and close off Hannah’s shop. Indefinitely, until the murderer is caught. This becomes a huge part of the storyline as Hannah is angry with Mike for being so stubborn and not letting her come back. Now this really bothers me, as can the police really do that? It seems in shows that they don’t keep a place of business or residence forever.

So I looked it up, and it turns out that the police can keep a place as long as they want, however they choose to revert it back to the owner as soon as possible. So there you go, Mike is just a big ol’ jerk and I hate him.

IDon'tlikeit

Moving on. Not only is Hannah locked out from her own kitchen, but she is forbidden to speak to any Connie Mac employee as Mike doesn’t want her meddling. They suspect Janie as being the murderer, but Mike knows that Hannah will refuse to accept that and try to find who she believes the “real murderer is.”

And of course Hannah does not listen.

See ya Mike

See ya Mike

She goes to the Inn and talks to Sally. There she finds out that EVERYONE hated Connie and all have reasons to kill her. All the maids at the Inn hate her; Connie fired the delivery truck driver;  she threatened to fire her long-time lawyer, Alan Carpenter; Paul, her husband, was cheating on her; he keeps postponing her book, and Kurt Howe, her publisher, is looking at getting fired if he can get her to commit; etc. Plus there is always money, the Connie Mac empire is enormous, and whoever inherits will be getting a lot of moolah.

WhoDoneIt?

bannerbooks-border-black-and-white

Thoughts after reading:

This was an okay book. I thought the mystery was so-so and the investigation kind of blah.

eh

At one point Mike is convinced Norman killed Connie because she made a difficult photo shoot. Really? Really?

stupidestthingever

This was dumb. Come on, Mike. Get your head out of your butt. Dumb. Why are the two cops so stupid in this series? I mean really. Come on son.

Icannotstandmorons_Laura

And they spend a long time talking about ice fishing. Really? Really?

movingOnsherlocknotinterested

And it turns out the reason Paul, Connie’s husband, was trying to get close to Janie is that he is secretly her biological father. It was pretty obvious and overdramatic.

nobodycares

So not horrible, but not fantastic. Just okay.

Grime and Punishment

Grime&Punishment

Grime and Punishment (Jane Jeffry #1) by Jill Churchill

Thoughts Before Reading:

So the first book I read in this series was From Here to Paternity. I got it for free from the library and hated it (more on that later). For some strange reason I thought I would give the first book a go to see if it was good, and when I read it, I loved it!

As you might have guessed, all the books in the series are reworking of famous films/literature. This one is of Crime and Punishment.

bannerbooks-border-black-and-white

The story is that widowed Jane Jeffry is doing a great job raising her kids. She has hidden from them the real reason dad was out that night when a car crashed into him, is there for her kids in carpooling, cooking, cleaning, supporting; but even supermoms need a little help.

seriously

She’s supported by her husbands life insurance and interests, letting her be a stay at home mom, and she can even afford a cleaning lady to come in. When her usual person retires, she and her best friend Shelley, the next-door-neighbor, manage to score the best cleaning lady in the neighborhood.

YayHappy-Success-GIF

On the day of the new cleaning lady’s fist day, it is also one of Shelley’s legendary PTA parties. Fed up with people always bringing the same thing, no main courses, and at least one poorly done meal, she now assigns each mother a specific dish, one they can drop off early in the day so everything is ready to go at meeting time. Everyone is used to this and Shelley just leaves her door open as she trusts her neighbors and the cleaning lady will be there.

IDon'tlikeit

That day Jane stops by early to see Shelley, and finds out that their new cleaning lady called in sick. Replaced this morning by another cleaner, who from far away and behind, looks just like her.

weird

Jane and Shelley visit, when Jane realizes she forgot to make her dish. She helps some other ladies drop off food, cleans up from the morning, runs around doing errands and finding ingredients. When she has everything completed, she goes to drop off the salad, happy to have made it under the wire. When she gets home she gets a call from Shelley. It turns out the cleaning lady is dead

StarTrekTheOriginalSeriesHesDeadJim

The police come and start the investigation, one sexy detective paying Jane a lot of attention. In fact they all pay her a lot of attention, thinking she is highly suspect in the cleaning lady’s murder.

Murder

It soon is figured out that the murder meant to kill the original cleaning lady, Edith, rather than the replacement. It turns out Edith is very nosy, and her urge to snoop has netted her something big, and a death wish.

Jane is on the case to figure out who the killer is and clean up her neighborhood. Hopefully she can sweep up the answers before she is the next victim.

bannerbooks-border-black-and-white

Thoughts After Reading:

In some ways it was very similar to Mrs. McGinty’s Dead, the cleaning woman is nosy and discovers a real tidbit, being murdered for it; but in other ways it is very enjoyable. I loved it so much I had a hard time putting it down, eager to discover which suburbanite is the murderer and what really happened the night Jane’s husband died.

I encourage you to read it as it was fantastic. Yes:
