“The Murders in the Rue Morgue (C. Auguste Dupin Mysteries #1)” from Ten Great Mysteries by Edgar Allen Poe

Thoughts Before Reading:

This was the first Edgar Allan Poe story I ever read. It came in an anthology and I loved it. It is just so creepy, dark, and great.

This is also believed to be the first detective mystery, Dupin being the forerunner to Sherlock Holmes in observation and sleuthing, Many believe that Doyle coped Poe with his character fifty years later, even though Doyle insists that Holmes is based on a professor he had while attaining his medical degree.

Plot Synopsis:

C. Auguste Dupin is from a very good family, but has lost all his money and is now poor. He has just a little bit of money, which enables him to live and afford his greatest vice, books.

Dupin lives with his friend, the nameless narrator, and astounds him with his deductive reasoning, being able to tell what he is thinking!

One morning they look in the paper and see the headline EXTRAORDINARY MURDERS.

 

The night before Madame L’Espanaye and her daughter, residents of Rue Morgue, were heard screaming in the middle of the night. People heard and tried to get in, but every door and window was locked on the ground floor. They eventually gained access by using a crowbar.

When they came in the room they found it in incredible discord and destruction.

WHAT!

The women were found was a razor caked with blood and gray tresses also dripping in blood, looking as if ripped from the head. Both women’s necks were cut so badly they were practically separated from their necks. Both women were also shoved up the chimney.

Everyone was questioned but no one knows why it was committed, who did it, or how. Everyone who came in heard the voice of whoever committed the act but could not understand the language. Some think it was Spanish, others Italian, etc.

Dupin becomes interested in the case and follows it in all the papers. The only thing that was open was a window on one of the higher stories. But how could anyone get in?

Dupin believes he has the case solved and places an ad in the newspaper to catch the killer. Has he figured it out? Who could have done such a horrible act?

I’ve had this salad before and loved it. So I decided to make my own. It is easy and only a few ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • Basil
  • Mozzarella Cheese
  • Tomatoes
  • Olive Oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Directions:

  1.  Pluck and wash the basil leaves.
  2. Slice the tomatoes.
  3. Slice the mozzarella into thick slices.
  4. Lay them in a line, alternating between the three ingredients.
  5. Drizzle on olive oil and add salt and pepper to taste.

This recipe comes from an old cookbook from the ’70s, Time Life’s American Cooking: The Melting Pot, and covers all kind of recipes from the different cultures in the USA.

I am Sicilian so when I saw the pizza I had to try it. I decided to not make the pizza dough with the recipe they gave but followed every other facet.

Unlike the familar round Neopolitan pizza,  Sicilian pizza is a newcomer to the pizza-loving Americans. It’s soft, breadlike crust and rectangular shape actually make it a more practical recipe for the home. The ingredients for the garnish are flexible; you can substitue such items as sliced cooked sausage, black olives or anchovies for the mushrooms and peppers-or add any or all of them to the recipe given here.”

Ingredients:

Pizza Dough

  • 3 Cups of Lukewarm Water (110 to 115 degrees F)
  • 2 Packages of Dry Yeast
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Sugar
  • 8-10 Cups of Flour
  • 1 Tablespoon of Salt
  • 4 Tablespoons of Vegetable Oil
  • 1 Tablespoon of Unsalted Butter, Softened

Directions:

  1. Pour 1/2 cup of lukewarm water into a cup and sprinkle with yeast and sugar.
  2. Let the mixture rest for 2-3 mins, then stir.
  3. Place the cup in a warm, draft-free place (such as an unlighted oven) for about 10 mins, or until the yeast bubbles and the mixture doubles in volume.
  4. Place the 8 cups of flour and the salt in a large mixing bowl and make a well in the center.
  5. Pour in yeast mixture, the ret of the water, the vegetable oil; and with a large wooden spoon incorporate the dry ingredients into the wet.
  6. Continue to stir until the ingredients are well combined and can be shaped into a ball.
  7. Transfer the ball onto a floured surface and begin to knead; pressing the ball with the heel of your hand, pressing forward and folding back.
  8. Knead until dough is smooth, and an elastic medium-firm; (incorporate the 2 more cups of flour if you need to).
  9. With a pastry brush, coat the bottom and the sides of the dough with butter.
  10. Place dough in a bowl and a warm drat-free place for 1-1.5 hours, or until the dough doubles in size. Punch it down with your fists and replace in the bowl to rise again.
  11. Meanwhile, prepare the tomato sauce.
  12. When dough has completed its rising, punch it down and then cut it in half.
  13. Roll out each half to fit in a jelly-roll pan.
  14. Place the dough on the pans and then stretch it with your fingers so hat it fills the edges and corners.
  15. Drape with a towel and place in warm, draft-free place until dough has risen double.

Ingredients:

Tomato Sauce:

  • 4 Tablespoons of Olive Oil
  • 1 Cup of finely Chopped Onions
  • 1.5 Teaspoons of finely chopped Garlic
  • 3-1lb cans of solid packed Tomatoes and their liquid
  • 1 Tablespoon of Basil
  • 1 Tablespoon of Oregano
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Sugar
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Pepper
  • 1.5 Teaspoons of Salt
  • 6 oz can of Tomato Paste

Directions:

  1. In a 10-12 inch heavy skillet heat the olive oil, until a lught haze forms.
  2. Add the onions and garlic, stirring frequently until the onion become translucent.
  3. Stir in tomatoes and their liquid, oregano, sugar, black pepper, salt, and tomato paste.
  4. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer for an hour.

Ingredients:

Pizza Garnish:

  • 1 lb of Mozzarella Cheese, coarsely grated
  • 1/2 Cup of finely grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 1 Cup of thinly sliced Mushrooms
  • 1 Large Green Bell Peeper; seeded, deribbed, and thinly sliced
  • 1 Large Red Bell Pepper; seeded, deribbed, and thinly sliced
  • 1/2 Cup of thinly chopped Onions
  • Chopped Sausage
  • Sliced Olives
  • 1/4 Cup of Olive Oil

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven tp 500 degrees F.
  2. Divide the sauce in half and coat the top of the dough.
  3. Bake in the center of the oven for 30 mintes, then sprinkle with mozzarella, Parmesan, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, olives,  and sausage.
  4. Dribble the olive oil on top and bake for 10 minutes longer.\Cut pizza into squares and serve at once.

Italian Wedding Soup

So if you haven’t guessed, Italian Wedding is a type of soup. They used to serve it at Olive Garden, but don’t anymore, of which saddens me as it is one of my favorite soups. But all is not lost, I can make it myself.

So I found this recipe on Pinterest, but it is originally from McCormick.com

Ingredients:

  • 1 Tablespoon of Olive Oil
  • 8 oz of Sweet or Hot Italian Style Turkey Sausage, cut into 1/2 inch thick slices
  • 1/2 Cup of Chopped Onion
  • 1  32-oz Can of Reduced Sodium Chicken Broth
  • 1  15-oz Can of Red Kidney Beans
  • 1  14.5-oz Can of Diced, no salt, Tomatoes
  • 1 Teaspoon of Oregano
  • 1 Teaspoon of Savory
  • 1 Teaspoon of Thyme
  • 1  6-oz package of Baby Spinach Leaves
  • 1/2 Cup of Uncooked Small Pasta

Directions:

  1. Heat oil in pan on medium heat.
  2. Add sausage and cook for three minuets.
  3. Add onion and cook for three minutes, or until meat is browned and onion tender.
  4. Pour meat and onion mixture into a pot.
  5. Add chicken broth.
  6. Drain and rinse red kidney beans, and then add to the pot.
  7. Add tomatoes, oregano, savory, and thyme to the pot.
  8. Stir mixture and bring to a boil.
  9. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.
  10. Stir in spinach and pasta.
  11. Return to boil on medium heat. When boiling, return to simmering on low until pasta noodles are cooked.

This is a recipe I absolutely love and thought I would share with you all. It kinda fits with the previous book, Glazed Murderas Suzanne and Jake go out to eat at an Italian restaurant, but that’s all the connection. Be sure to give this recipe a try as I’m not kidding. It is delish!

Ingredients:

  • 2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil
  • 4 Skinless, boneless Chicken Breasts, cut into 1 inch cubes
  • 3 Carrots, sliced into 1/4 inch pieces
  • 1 10-oz package of frozen broccoli florets
  • 2 Cloves of garlic, minced
  • 12-oz package of Angel Hair pasta
  • 2/3 Cup of Chicken Broth
  • 1 Teaspoon of Dried Basil
  • 1/4 Cup of Grated Parmesan Cheese

Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat; add chicken. Cook, stirring until chicken is cooked through. Remove from skillet

Begin heating water for pasta. Heat another tablespoon of olive oil in the skillet. Add carrots to skillet, cooking for 4 minutes. Add broccoli and garlic to skillet, cooking for two minutes.

Cook pasta according to package directions. Add chicken broth, basil, and Parmesan to skillet. Stir the skillet. Return chicken to skillet. Reduce heat and simmer for 4 minutes.

Drain pasta. Place in a large serving bowl. Top with chicken and vegetables. Serve with added parmesan cheese if you so desire.

Now this is my own recipe I created one day when I was trying to add flavor to my air popped popcorn. It isn’t an exact recipe, as it is done more by feel than actually sizing them out.

Ingredients:

  • Air Popper
  • Popcorn Kernels
  • Grated Parmesan Cheese (fresh not powdered)
  • Butter
  • Italian Seasoning
  • Dried Oregano

The first thing to do is to take as much butter you would wish on your popcorn and  melt it in the microwave. Leave it in so it cools a bit but not too much.

As your butter is in the microwave, prepare the popcorn according to your popper’s instructions.

When the popcorn is finished, toss the butter on top. Add a bit of Italian seasoning, oregano, and cheese. Mix it all up and add more cheese or seasoning, until it is flavored how you like it.

Well I made it so I loved it! I thought it was a nice change from just buttered popcorn. And it tastes better than those flavorers that you buy at the store.
