So I’ve decided to start the tradition of always posting on New Year’s Eve, and including one tasty drink recipe.

So this recipe comes from my sister blog theCatWhoWroteaBlog.wordpress.comNow my big sister blog TheCatWhoWroteaBlog usually does this with all the recipes in one post. I prefer doing one at a time so I won’t be reposting the whole thing.

Ingredients:

  • 8 Cups Water
  • 2 Cups Sugar
  • 3/4 Cup Lemon Juice
  • 1/4 Cup of Maraschino Cherry Juice

Directions:

  1. Bring two cups of water to a boil.
  2. Add sugar to the water and stir over a medium heat until sugar is dissolved.
  3. Add the lemon and maraschino cherry juice to the sugar-water.
  4. Pour juice mixture and remaining water into a pitcher.
  5. Stir and chill.
  6. Serves 10-12.

This was really good lemonade.

Typically I post a recipe, but as I stumbled upon a book that not only takes place on the 4th of July but features a president, I thought I would post on this instead.

The Hyde Park Murder (Eleanor Roosevelt Investigates #2) by Elliot Roosevelt

Neighbor Adriana van der Meer comes to Eleanor Roosevelt for help. She was engaged to Bob Hannah, but her parents no longer want her to see him. His father, Alfred Doolittle Hannah, has just been accused of a multi-million dollar stock swindle.

But before the case can go to court, Bob’s father dies by suicide.

Not only are the upcoming nuptials on hold, but Bob is convinced that not only did his father not participate in the scam, but that he did not die by suicide but:

Bob sets out to investigate, going undercover as a lowly employee in his father’s former company. He also gets assistance from a call girl, Miss Moira Lasky.

On the case!

Eleanor decides to assist, bringing in the Securities and Exchange Commissioner, Joseph P. Kennedy, Mayor Fiorella La Guardia, Supreme Justice Brandies, and congressman Sam Rayburn.

It turns out that what they stumbled on is more than just a con, but masking who is really behind it all; the growing German Nazi Party.

Seriously?

Will they be able to stop them before they take America’s money to fund their war?

Thoughts After Reading:

It was okay.

I didn’t think it was as bad as the first one, but it was pretty boring and bland.

They go on and on about stock information I really did not care to know about.

 The only interesting character was Moira but she wasn’t in the book enough.

Crazy Cantina Chili

So today is:

As I am part Mexican, this is a holiday I celebrate every year. I haven’t posted anything for this day yet as haven’t made anything that would be perfect for any Cinco de Mayo celebration. But today I have something:

Chili

Thoughts Before Cooking:

So a friend of mine entered me in a chili competition and I was at a loss of what to do. I’ve never really cooked chili, but then I decided to do a recipe from The Star Wars Cookbook:Wookie Cookies and Other Galactic Recipes by Robin Davis.

Ingredients:

  • 1 16-0z Can of Kidney Beans
  • 1 16-oz Can of Black Beans
  • 1 16-oz Can of Garbanzo Beans
  • 1/2  a Large Onion
  • 2 Tablespoons of Vegetable Oil
  • 2 Tablespoons of Chili Powder
  • 1/8 Teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 28-oz Can of Crushed Tomatoes with Juice (I used the Diced Tomatoes with Chiles as I like my food HOT!)
  • 1 Cup of Tomato Juice
  • 1 lb of Ground Beef or Turkey (Optional)
  • Salt and Pepper to Taste
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • Sour Cream or Plain Yogurt

Directions for Vegetarian Chili:

  1. Open the cans of beans. Drain off the liquid from the cans in the sink. Rinse and set aside.
  2. Chop the onion and set aside.
  3. Put the oil in a large saucepan and set the pan on medium heat.
  4. When the oil is hot, add the chopped onions and stir with a wooden spoon until tender, about 5 minutes.
  5. Add the chili powder and cayenne pepper and stir for 30 seconds.
  6. Add the beans, tomatoes, tomato juice; and stir well.
  7. Reduce heat to medium low and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  8. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  9. Serve Chili with cheese and/or sour cream

Directions for Meat Chili:

  1. Cook meat in a pan on the stove.
  2. Follow the directions above, adding the meat during step 7.

Thoughts After Cooking:

I thought the original recipe was good, but wasn’t as hot as I liked it so I added the chiles. I also included meat as I thought it would be more appealing.

I didn’t win the contest, but I had fun trying.

Yoda Soda

So you know what today is!

That means that it is time to post a recipe from my The Star Wars Cookbook: Wookie Cookies and Other Galactic Recipes by Robin Davis.

Thoughts Before Cooking:

My nephew had been looking through my cookbook and wanted to try out this Yoda Soda as he thought it sounded really good. Sadly we did not have the ingredients needed, so I promised the next time he spent the night we would make them.

Ingredients:

  • 3 Limes
  • 3 Tablespoons of Sugar, or more to taste
  • 1 Cup of Sparkling Water
  • 1 Scoop of Lime Sherbet or Sorbet (you can substitute rainbow sherbet or lemon sorbet.)

Directions:

  1. Place one lime on the cutting board and slice in half.
  2. Squeeze the juice from each half into a measuring cup.
  3. Repeat with the limes until you have 1/4 cup of juice.
  4. Put the lime juice and three tablespoons of sugar in a small pitcher.
  5. Stir with a wooden spoon until the sugar dissolves. Add the sparkling water and stir until mixed.
  6. Taste and add more sugar if desired.
  7. Using an ice cream scoop, scoop the sherbet and drop it into a tall glass.
  8. Pour in the lime water.
  9. Serve immediately.

Thoughts After Cooking:

This turned out good but only makes one drink.

WHAT!

Yes all that work for ONE DRINK!!!

It is also impossible to find lime sherbet or sorbet ANYWHERE. I had to substitute with rainbow. It wasn’t bad, but I would have liked to try the recipe as it was originally created.

But it was pretty good. I suggest trying it out and seeing if you think it is worth the effort and time to make.

Gingerbread Cookie Murder (Hannah Swensen #13.5) by Joanne Fluke

So I hate these Hannah Swenson holiday specials.

They are boring, predictable, and just avenues to include a ton of Christmas type recipes. But I started something, and now I am going to finish it. The review must go on.

Plot Synopsis:

It is Christmas time once again in Lake Eden. Ernie Kusak, driver, chauffeur, etc; has recently won the lottery, moved into Hannah’s condo, and started playing Christmas music incredibly loud and ALL THE TIME.

I don’t like it.

He told Hannah he would turn it down tonight, so hopefully he does.

Yay!

That night Hannah goes out with Norman, his mother Carrie, her new husband Earl, Hannah’s mother Delores, and her new boyfriend Gary Jenkins. He just moved into town, and bought Ernie’s old house.

When Hannah gets home she discovers that Ernie negated on his promise and that all the music is on and full blast.

Luckily someone has called the police, so Mike is there. Ernie’s ex-wife loans Mike her spare key to get into the house and they find Ernie’s dead body.

Who killed him? And why?

So what did I think?

So what are my issues with this book?

1)Helpful Hannah

Mike questions Lorna, as we all know the wife/ex-wife usually has good motive for murder. Hannah tries to help by telling her she didn’t do it and it’s horrible to have her be accused. HELLO Hannah if you interfere with Mike’s questioning he is never going to let you in on anything. And two, you don’t know that she didn’t do it. She could be the killer.

Seriously Hannah!

2)Mike Questions Hannah as the killer

Really Mike? You think that she could be a killer. My goodness that is the dumbest thing I ever heard. Why are the deputies so stupid!

3)How does Hannah run her business?

How does Hannah make any money selling her goods at 50¢?

4)The Cops are Idiots

Now it hurts me to write this as I like police officers. My family has had them throughout and I respect them. But man they are so stupid in this book series.

The cops seem to get dumber in each book. In this one they think one man killed Ernie, but only wiped half of his fingerprints, leaving the crucial ones. Really? Smells like a frame-up

5)Fluke Knows Nothing of Cell Phones.

So Hannah discovers that Gary’s phone number was the same on the winning ticket. You know you don’t pick your number when you get a cell phone, you have one assigned. So it is pretty strange to choose “these” influential numbers that mean something, when he couldn’t do that.

6) It is All Circumstansial Evidence

And the dumbest thing to this book? How Hannah discovers the reason for murder and the guy admits it. So all the numbers on Gary’s phone number all have a certain special meaning to him. These are also the ones he chooses for the lottery ticket, the one Ernie claims is his. He has it framed and hanging on the wall, Gary spots it and kills him. Hannah figures it out and when she questions him, all Gary has to do is deny it. There is no proof he was in there, just because they use the same numbers doesn’t mean anything. It all is circumstantial. All he has to do is say he doesn’t know anything, let them prosecute the other guy and go on his way. Why would he give himself up? It’s just dumb, dumb, dumb.

Irish Apple Cake with Custard Sauce

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

Thoughts Before Baking:

So I had thought I was making a pie for Saint Patrick’s Day as I posted Tuesday, but I realized that I had it wrong, I had a cake recipe, not a pie.

Oh well. Here we go. I got this recipe from The Kitchen McCabe.

Ingredients:

Cake:

  • 3 Cups of Flour
  • 2 Teaspoons of Baking Powder
  • 1/8 Teaspoon of Salt
  • 1/4 Teaspoon of Ground Cloves
  • 1/4 Teaspoon of Ground Nutmeg
  • 12 Tablespoons of Butter
  • 3/4 Cup of Sugar
  • 4 Large Granny Smith Apples
  • 2 Eggs
  • 3/4 Cup of Milk
  • 2 Tablespoons of Sugar (For sprinkling on top of the cake.)

Custard:

  • 6 Large Egg Yolks
  • 6 Tablespoons of Sugar
  • 1.5 Cups of Whole Milk
  • 1.5 Teaspoons of Vanilla

Directions:

Cake:

  1. Grease and flour an 8″ or 9″ springform pan. If you do not have a springform pan then cover a pan with foil and grease it.
  2. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  3. Sift the flour, baking powder, salt, cloves, and nutmeg into a large mixing bowl. (Make sure the bowl is very large as everything will later be combined into it.)
  4. Cut the butter into the flour using your fingers or a pastry cutter until the mixture resembles fine crumbs.
  5. Add the 3/4 cup of sugar to the flour mixture and mix in.
  6. Peel the apples and slice them into uniform pieces (about 1/4″ wide and then cut into three pieces.)
  7. Toss the apples into the flour mixture and combine thoroughly.
  8. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and milk together. Add this to the flour mixture and mix. The batter should be thick and dough-like.
  9. Transfer the dough to the pan and fatten the top with the back of a spatula.
  10. Sprinkle sugar over the top of the cake.
  11. Bake for 45-50 mins. Test the center for doneness. The top of the cake should be a golden brown.
  12. Serve slices with the custard sauce.

Custard Sauce:

  1. Place the egg yolks and sugar in a bowl and whisk until pale yellow, 2-3 mins.
  2. Place the milk in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil.
  3. Slowly whisk the hot milk into the egg/sugar mixture.
  4. Transfer the mixture back into the saucepan and stir over a medium heat until the custard thickens, about 4 minutes. Custard should be thick enough to coat the back of the spoon.
  5. Mix in the vanilla and then transfer to a bowl or serving saucer.
  6. Serve warm or cold over the apple cake.

So I tried making the custard, but the eggs cooked too fast and this is what they ended up being:

So I instead went with the glaze from A is for Applesauce Cake.

Otherwise, the cake was good. It wasn’t really sweet, but I enjoyed it. Good with tea or coffee.

So I got this book years ago as a gift and I haven’t made that many items out of it. I made a few things, which I would make over and over. As I was looking at my cookbooks, I finally decided to make something different, Rice Krispies Cookies

“Not your traditional oatmeal cookie-an even better one! RICE KRISPIES add that extra crunch and the [chocolate chips] supplies the extra sweetness.”

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup of All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Baking Soda
  • 1/4 Teaspoon of Baking Powder
  • 1/4 Teaspoon of Salt
  • 1/2 Cup of Butter or Margarine, Softened
  • 1/2 Cup of White Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup of Brown Sugar
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Cup of Kellogg’s Rice Krispies
  • 1 Cup of Quick-Cooking Oats
  • 1/2 Cup of Coconut or Chocolate Chips

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degree Fahrenheit
  2. Lightly coat two large cookie sheets with nonstick cooking spray or butter. Set aside.
  3. Combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a mixing bowl. Set aside.
  4. Place the butter in the bowl and beat with an electric mixer on medium until light and fluffy.
  5. Add the white and brown sugars and beat until blended, Add the egg and vanilla, beating to incorporate.
  6. Stir in the flour mixture. When well combined, stir in the cereal, oats and coconut or chocolate chips.
  7. Drop the cookie dough by tablespoonful onto the baking sheets, leaving room between the cookies.
  8. Bake for 12 mins, or until the cookies are lightly browned.
  9. Remove from the oven and let cool.

These cookies were fantastic! I couldn’t stop eating them.

Gung Hay Fat Choy or Happy Chinese New Year!

Today marks the new year, the year of the Rooster. Roosters are trustworthy, with a strong sense of timekeeping and responsibility at work. Some famous Roosters are Donny Osmond, Dolph Lundgren, and Jennifer Lopez. Roosters are best with Oxen and Snakes; but should avoid Rats, Rabbits, Horses, and Pigs.

In honor of this being the year of the Rooster, I have decided what better way than to have a chicken recipe.

Bake Until Golden

Thoughts Before Cooking:

This recipe is from Bake Until Golden, the wraps Lisa Leann makes when they are in a hurry to get to the airport. I’ve never made wraps before, but have always wanted to try, so I give this a look.

Ingredients:

Dressing:

  • 1/4 Cup of Mayonnaise
  • 3 Tablespoons of Honey Mustard
  • 1/2 Tablespoon of Red Wine Vinegar
  • 1/4 Teaspoon of Salt
  •  A dash of Pepper

Meat Mixture:

  • 1.5 Cups of Chicken
  • 1 Cup of Celery, Chopped
  • 1/4 cup of Cashews, Chopped
  • Flour tortillas (I used wheat)
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • 1/8 cup of Onion, Chopped

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, create the dressing by stirring the mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, salt, and pepper.
  2. Next: add the chicken, celery, cashews, and onion to the dressing.
  3. Stir well.
  4. Warm the tortillas on the stove.
  5. Scoop some of the chicken mixture into the tortilla.
  6. Sprinkle cheese on top.
  7. Roll it up like a burrito.

So last year I did a breakfast food post and I thought that it would be fun to keep that tradition going!

I found this recipe in a Good Housekeeping magazine, I don’t remember which one, and it intrigued me. Potato chips in an omelet? Will that taste good?

Ingredients:

  • 8 Large Eggs, beaten
  • 3 Cups (about 4 oz.) of Potato Chips, Crushed
  • 1/4 Cup of Fresh Parsley, Chopped
  • 2 Tablespoons of Oil (I used Olive Oil)
  • 1 Small Onion, Chopped
  • 1/4 Teaspoon of Smoked Paprika (Can substitute with Cayenne Pepper)
  • Salt and Pepper

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl combine the eggs, potato chips, and parsley.
  2. In a 10 inch nonstick skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of oil on medium-low.
  3. Add the chopped onion and cook for 8 minutes.
  4. Stir slowly, until the edges start to set. Cook undisturbed until top is mostly set.
  5. Cover with a large lid and carefully flip. (If your skillet has no lid, use a large plate or platter without a rim.)
  6. Slide the omelet back into the pan and cook 5 minutes, or until set.
  7. Sprinkle with paprika.
  8. Add salt and pepper to taste.
  9. Serve with an arugula salad and a baguette.

Blueberry Smoothie

  • 1 Cup of Blueberries (Fresh or Frozen
  • 1 Cup of Vanilla Yogurt
  1. Blend together!

Yogurt Free Blueberry Smoothie

  • 1 Cup of Blueberries (Fresh or Frozen)
  • 1 Cup of Milk
  • 1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract
  1. Blend together

Greek Yogurt Blueberry Smoothie

  • 1 Cup of Blueberries (Fresh or Frozen)
  • 1 Cup of Greek Yogurt
  • 1 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract or a splash of Vanilla Creamer
  1. Blend together.

Blueberry Kale Smoothie

  1. Choose one of the above smoothies.
  2. Puree a few leaves of kale in a blender.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients.

Once again I am posting today, not on something you need for the meal but something to help out tomorrow morning before you do your Black Friday shopping!

I found this recipe on Pinterest, but I can’t recall exactly from whom I received it from. Oops!

Ingredients:

  • Peanut Butter
  • 1 Banana
  • Rice Krispies

Directions:

  1. Take the banana and cover in peanut butter.
  2. Take a shallow dish and cover it in aluminum foil or wax paper.
  3. Pour in some Rice Krispies.
  4. Take the banana and roll it in the Rice Krispies.
  5. Slice up the banana or eat it whole.

Happy 4th everybody! I don’t know about you all, but where I’m at it is going to be one HOT, HOT, HOT day.

So I was looking for something that would be tasty and cool to eat/cook.

I got this recipe from The Kitchen is My Playground and the original title is Triple Berry Salad with Simple Vanilla Syrup.

Ingredients:

  • 6-8 ounces of Strawberries
  • 6 ounces of Blueberries
  • 6 ounces of Raspberries
  • 1/4 Cup of Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup of Water
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract

Directions:

  1. Place sugar and water in small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Bring mixture to a simmer (there will be small bubbles), and stir until the sugar is dissolved.
  3. Remove from heat and cool for 5 mins.
  4. Stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Chill completely in fridge.
  6. Rinse the berries.
  7. Hull the strawberries and slice into 2-3 pieces.
  8. Place all the berries in one bowl.
  9. Just before serving, drizzle the berries with the vanilla sugar syrup.
  10. Toss gently.
  11. Serve.

Grilled Zucchini Roll-Ups

So I know what today is…

That’s okay stay strong. I have a recipe to try out that will be the perfect pairing to whatever your Friday the 13th plans are.

So I got the recipe from Health.com and it sounded tasty and healthy (of course) so I thought I would try it out.

Ingredients:

  • 3 small zucchini (about 1/2 pound each), cut lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/16 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste
  • 1.5 ounces fresh goat cheese
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 2 ounces bagged baby spinach (2 cups lightly packed)
  • 1/3 cup basil leaves

Directions:

  1. Preheat grill or grill pan to medium.
  2. Discard the outermost slices of zucchini; brush the rest with oil on both sides.
  3. Sprinkle the zucchini slices with salt and pepper.
  4. Grill until tender, about 4 minutes per side. (You can prepare the zucchini a day ahead and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.)
  5. In a small bowl, combine the goat cheese, parsley, and lemon juice, mashing together with a fork.
  6. Put 1/2 teaspoon of the cheese mixture about 1/2 inch from the end of a zucchini slice.
  7. Top with a few spinach leaves and a small (or half of a large) basil leaf.
  8. Roll up and place seam side down on a platter. Repeat with remaining zucchini slices.

So I wasn’t originally planning on posting anything today, but then I came across a book that just fit the theme and decided:

Charles “Mack” MacKenzie Jr. was your average college student. He came from a rich family, had a loving mother and father; a great little sister, good friends, a nice apartment; everyone who meet him liked him, he was studying to be a lawyer–i.e he has it all.

Carolyn decides to devote the next three weeks to searching; if she doesn’t find Mack then she will finally move on with her life, but if she does then she will finally have the mystery solved.

She begins requestioning people from her brother’s past and happens upon some strange things. His old landlords are cagey, their statements contradictory, and they are all around reluctant to talk about that time. Could they possibly be involved with Mack’s disappearance?

One of Mack’s old roommates, who is married to Mack’s old girlfriend; also doesn’t want to speak to Carolyn at all. And when he heard that Carolyn was asking questions he whisked his wife and kids out of the city. Very suspicious.

As Carolyn continues to investigate, she discovers that Mack was taking drama lessons and would record himself. When she tries to reach out to his former teacher she is told that the woman was killed while being mugged and that her house was broken into.

Meanwhile, the police are swamped with a disappearance of a girl, Leesey, who lives right next door to Carolyn. She is the third in a series of such disappearances, the girls or their bodies never being found. As the cops are racing against the clock to find her, one detective looks through older evidence and discovers that Mack was at the same club the first girl disappeared from. Could he be involved with this vanishing? Or did he know who was and then disappeared because he was afraid.

With the press and police out to hang her brother for the crimes; and Carolyn starting to doubt his innocence as well; she knows more now than ever she must find him. But where is he?

Thoughts After Reading:

I’ve only read a few Mary Higgins Clark: this book, Daddy’s Gone A Hunting, and Let Me Call You Sweetheart. For me I’ve noticed that her books are either a hit;

At first I loved the book, it had a very strong premise; the characters were interesting, and was written so well I had a hard time keeping my hands and mind off of it.

Mary Higgins Clark likes doing multiple narrations, and I really liked how she incorporated the killers mind. It was only a few times it really added to the book.

However, the ending to this book just fell flat. The person they choose and the reasons behind it were kind of boring. You know same old same old.

I also didn’t like the way she portrayed the police officers. They were mean and a bit stupid. They concentrated more on making the facts suit their theories rather than the facts speak for themselves.

So as you can tell I am a big fan of Star Wars. I decided what better way to celebrate than to make some Star Warsian delicacy. So I borrowed my big sister janeaustenrunsmylife.wordpress.com‘s Star Wars cookbook and decided to make this recipe for you all.

This recipe comes from The Star Wars Cookbook:Wookie Cookies and Other Galactic Recipes by Robin Davis.

My nephew spotted the cookbook I had borrowed from janeaustenrunsmylife and really wanted to make a recipe out of it; so we looked around and discovered we had just the things to create some Wookie Cookies.

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 Cup of Flour
  • 1 Teaspoon of Baking Soda
  • 1 Teaspoon of Salt
  • 1 Teaspoon of Ground Cinnamon
  • 1 Cup of Unsalted Butter, at room temperature
  • 1 Cup of packed Brown Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup of Granulated Sugar (White Sugar)
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 1.5 Teaspoons of Vanilla Extract
  • 1 Cup of Milk Chocolate Chips
  • 1 Cup of Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Put the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon in a mixing bowl.
  3. Stir with a wooden spoon until well mixed. Set aside.
  4. Put the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar in another bowl.
  5. Using an electric mixer set in high speed, beat together the sugar mixture until blended and creamy (~3 mins).
  6. Beat in the eggs and vanilla extract.
  7. Add the flour mixture and stir with a wooden spoon until well blended.
  8. Stir in chocolate chips.
  9. Scoop up a rounded tablespoonful of the dough and drop onto a baking sheet. Repeat until you have used all the dough. (Be sure to leave an inch between them as they expand as they bake)
  10. Bake the cookies until golden brown (~10 mins).

I only had one problem though. I bought the chocolate chips on sale and when I got home realized one was regular size while the other jumbo. This made it hard to scoop out dough with multiple chocolate chips, as the jumbo ones made most have only one. Next time I will have to make sure my chips are the same size.

A great addition to any fan’s Star Warsian celebrations. Just be sure to share.
