Saucy Spider with Hairy Leg Sticks

So I wanted to make sure you all had a Halloween-y recipe for whatever parties or events you may be having this year. My tia shared this recipe on facebook, and I decided I HAD to make it.

This recipe for how to make the spider comes from Woman’s Day and calls for 2 balls of pizza dough. I decided to make it myself and instead of trying the Sicilian pizza recipe, I got this pizza dough recipe from Bigger Bolder Baking’s 15-Minute Pizza Dough Recipe (No Yeast)

Pizza Dough Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 Cups of Flour
  • 3 Teaspoons of Baking Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon of Salt
  • 3/4 Cup + 2 Tablespoons of Water
  • 1 Tablespoon of Olive Oil

Pizza Dough Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees F
  2. In a mixing bowl-combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Whisk until thoroughly combined and set aside.
  4. Combine the water and oil in a separate jug or cup.
  5. Slowly add the water and oil mixture to the flour mixture, holding back a little in case you don’t need it all.
  6. Using a wooden spoon, or your hands, mix until the dough is combined. It should be soft, but not sticky.
  7. Add a splash more water if you dough is dry.

Saucy Spider Ingredients:

  • 2 Balls of Pizza Dough
  • 1 Large Egg
  • 1/4 Cup + 2 Tbsp of Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 1 Large Pitted Black Olive
  • 2 Cups of Marinara Sauce

Spider Directions:

  1. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Make the spider by cutting one ball of dough in half.
  3. Shape one half into a 5-inch ball to make the spider body.
  4. Cut a 1 1/2 inch strip from the remaining half and shape into a 2 1/2 inch ball to make the head.
  5. Cut the remaining dough into 8 strips and roll each strip into a 6 inch rope to make the legs.
  6. Arrange the body, legs, and head on one of the prepared baking sheets to resemble a spider, gently pressing all of the pieces of dough together.
  7. Brush the spider with some of the egg.
  8. Sprinkle the legs 2 Tbsp Parmesan cheese.
  9. Place 2 of the olive slices on the top of the head for eyes and 2 on the bottom for pincers.
  10. Bake until golden brown, 25-30 mins. (Cover the legs with foil if they brown too quickly).
  11. Meanwhile, make the spider leg sticks. Cut the remaining ball of dough into into 8 pieces.
  12. Roll each piece into a 3/4 inch thick rope.
  13. Cut each rope into various lengths.
  14. Taper one end of each piece and slightly bend the others to resemble legs.
  15. Place on the second baking sheet, brush with the remaining egg and sprinkle with the remaining 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese.
  16. Bake until golden brown-15-20 minutes.
  17. Meanwhile, warm marinara sauce.
  18. Using a knife, hollow out the body of the spider and fill with the warm sauce.
  19. Serve with the leg sticks.

Thoughts After Reading:

So the dough was okay, but too salty for me. I don’t think I would make it again. It also only made one ball of dough so I didn’t get any spider legs out of it.

The spider was so cute. I ended up making White Bean and Barley Soup with Tomatoes and Greens and filled my spider with it.

It was easy to make too, and I’m going to try and do it for a future party.

Soo good!

Rosemary’s Baby

Rosemary’s Baby (Rosemary’s Baby #1) by Ira Levin

So I have seen this film and loved it. When the book was donated to the library and added to the collection-I couldn’t help it. I needed to read it. I had to see if it was as good.

It blew me away! The movie was great-but Ira Levin is on par with Robert Louis Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde-no matter how many times have seen the film or read the book every time feels like the first time.

This book was AMAZING. I mean the film really was fantastic in staying close to the book but the writings was so amazing.

I mean-read it. I loved it. I couldn’t put it down. The emotion-Rosemary is so sweet and young and caring. She loves Guy even though he is a narcissistic prig.  All she wants is a nice home with her handsome husband and to have a baby.

You feel for her as she works on her home-her hopes and dreams and they are all dashed because of her horrible husband who trades his wife’s love to get a better career.

I can’t do this book justice. It was so good. Read it is all I can say. You will love it. You will love it so much you won’t be able to stop. Trust me. If you like any mystery, horror, thrills, suspense, etc-you will LOVE this as much as me.

And just in time for Halloween, Ihope you all have a happy-safe-holiday.

The October Game

“The October Game” from Long After Midnight by Ray Bradbury

Thoughts Before Reading:

Long After Midnight is a collection of short stories by Ray Bradbury. While most of his work is science fiction, every now and then he writes something we can post on this blog. Originally I was just going to post something tomorrow, but thought hey what the heck! Why not post on Halloween? Espechially as I have one creepy and spooky story for you all.

Mich wants his wife dead.

gunshooting

But he doesn’t want to shoot her, it is not the right way to do it. She must be in agony, it must take time.

halloween-michael-myers-gif

It is Halloween night, Mich’s least favorite time of the year.

PumpkinHalloween

That night they are having a Halloween party and his wife, Louisa is getting everything ready from treats to games.

She flits around from room to room always leaving the room that Mich enters. Mich thinks of it as a game, following and asking for things but all the while thinking about killing her.

She finally locks herself in the bathroom and Mich cannot follow.

His daughter Marion approaches him, dressed as a skeleton. To further his anger, Louise had never wanted a child, but became pregnant with a girl. A girl that looked nothing like Mich and only like Louise, growning up following in her ways. And afterwards she could have no more. No child that looks like Mich. No son.

It's not fair.

It’s not fair.

Divorce wouldn’t hurt her, she would be free to marry someone else. No the only thing to really hurt her would be to get rid of Marion!

you're evil

That’s it Mich has decided to take her child away from her.

perfectplan

By 10 the party is winding down. Apples bobbed, the donkey’s tail pinned, the bottle spun, musical chairs completed, etc.

1920sparty

Mich is in the center of it all, playing along with the kids all the parents commenting on him.

wow

It was then time to go down to the cellar for the Haunted House.

Sabrina the teenage witch salem dum di dum dum dum

Mich has the room pitch black. The witch is dead he says. She has been killed and here is the knife that she was killed with. And passes it around.

stabknife

He says the witch is dead and this is her head passing it on.

One of the kids calls out that they know what this is all about.

Chicken skin is used for skin, clay mold for the head, grapes for eyes, noodles for innards, etc. They tell him to shush and continue listening.

Mich then says, the witch came to harm  and this is her arm, passing it around. The witch is cut apart this is her heart.

And on it goes with each item being passed from person to person.

Some of the kids freak out and call to their parents, with them calming him. Louise calls to Marion, don’t be afraid it is all okay. But Marion doesn’t say anything.

That'sOdd

She’s calls out to her, but still no answer.

Mich tells her to calm down that all is fine. But Louise continues to call out for her and everyone looking.

One parent says to turn on the lights, and a boy goes upstairs to look.  Louise cries out while the items stop being passed along the room.

And then someone turns on the light.

Thoughts After Reading:

So in case you didn’t get it, he killed her. He killed his daughter.

Catering to Nobody

Catering to Nobody (Goldy Bear Culinary Mystery #1) by Diane Mott Davidson

So I was first introduced to this mystery series when I scored a free copy of Chopping Spree. One day I was going to eat dinner alone when I realized I forgot the book I had been reading. I searched my car for something to read when I came upon Chopping Spree. I started reading it and became hooked! I then decided it was time to start at the beginning.

So this book takes place on Halloween, making it perfect to review in October.

Plot Synopsis:

Goldy has had a hard time of it lately.

BigBangTheoryMyliferightnow

After she and her abusive/cheating husband divorced; she discovered that even though he makes plenty of money he still hates parting with it. Instead of relying on his childcare payments (most of which never come) Goldy started her own catering business.

cookingfood

It hasn’t been easy, but Goldy has been working hard making a name for herself in Aspen, Colorado.

Lordoftherings LifeisGood

However, things have gotten grimmer as her son Arch’s favorite teacher just committed suicide. And Goldy is the one in charge of catering the wake.

Aw...

But she does have some good in her life. Pomeroy, is a good friend, and her honey supplier. And she has her best friend Marla, one of her husband’s, John Richard’s, previous wives.

She’s supposed to have an assistant, who gets a free room for helping cook, but the girl, Patty Sue isn’t very smart and can’t do anything without making a mess or destroying what she is doing.

2013-11-27-bradpitt friends ugh slap face stupid

All Patty seems to do is see Goldy’s ex-father-in-law, Dr. Fritz. Supposedly she suffers from some severe medical problem and Fritz is the only one who can treat him. His wife, Goldy’s ex-mother-in-law asked if she would be willing to assist Patty. And Goldy being incredibly kind, agreed.

So Goldie works hard catering, her business subsidized by cleaning homes, and trying to do a great job with her horrible ex-husband and family there.

From my sister blog janeaustenrunsmylife.wordpress.com

Except she drinks espresso.

But then something happens that destroys everything. Her father-in-law drinks poisoned coffee at one of her events!

AAAAHHHHH

Because of that her catering business is shut down.

luke-noooo-o

But Goldie won’t let that go without a fight. She sets out to prove she wasn’t the one poisoning Fritz.

don'tneedsleepneedanswers

Along the way, she starts to come across some information that makes her question whether the teacher, Laura, actually committed suicide or if she was murdered.

Murder

To further heat this up, Officer Tom Shultz has taken an interest in Goldie and hopes to cook up some romance.

Fudge Cupcake Murder

Fudge Cupcake Murder

Fudge Cupcake Murder (Hannah Swenson #5)

So I know you guy think I just like to hate on Joanne Fluke.

Hate her that's so raven

But that’s not true.

Thats-a-Lie-how-i-met-your-mother-barney-gif

I just don’t like subpar writing. When it’s bad, I’m going to call you out on it. When it’s good, I will also point that out. And while I haven’t liked the first four mysteries, I actually enjoyed this.

likeit

So back in Blueberry Muffin Murder, Hannah Swensen discussed having a Lake Eden cookbook full of recipes only known to them. Well in this book, the Lake Eden Cookbook is in the middle of becoming a reality.

Besides The Cookie Jar, Hannah has taken on a temporary side job teaching cooking at the community college. As Lake Eden is getting ready to create a cookbook of family recipes, Hannah feels that there is no better opportunity than to have the class prepare the submitted recipes.

cookingfood

And there is no time like the present. It is days from Halloween, but all recipes must be typed, tested, photographed, etc.; in time for the cookbook to be completed and ready to be sold at Christmas.

lets-do-this-ucas-gif

Hannah is enjoying her new jobs as cooking teacher and head of the cookbook, when she is approached by her friend Beatrice. Beatrice asks her to include the Fudge Cupcakes that her mother-in-law was famous for. Only one problem, there is a secret ingredient, and with the mother-in-law dead, no one knows what it could possibly be.

what have i gotten myself into star trek next gen

Well, Hannah likes solving mysteries, and at least this one doesn’t have a dead body in it, so she begins working on trying to find the missing piece to the puzzle.

resized_all-the-things-meme-generator-i-will-conquer-all-tomorrow-ab53d3

In other news, Hannah’s sister Andrea is pregnant and her husband Bill is running for Sheriff. Sheriff Grant has been running the town for years, and when polls come out with him in the low numbers, he starts to pick up his game to get more support.  He approaches Hannah outside the center, and she gives him a cupcake, along with a promise that Bill will win.

Smirkity smirk smirk

Smirkity smirk smirk

Hannah then goes on to a productive day in class. The group cooks up a whole mess of recipes and solve some elusive handwriting. Hannah still doesn’t know the ingredient for the cupcakes, but hasn’t given up yet.

gotthis

That night, Mike picks her up for dinner, helping her clean up the kitchen first. She goes out to the dumpster to throw away the garbage and discovers a body. And not just any body, but Sheriff Grant.

AAAAHHHHH

Now Bill is suspended as he is the prime suspect and Hannah finds herself on the case.

veronicamarsinvestigatesleuth

This proves to be difficult, as Sheriff Grant was a hated man, hated almost by EVERYONE. Could he have been killed by a deputy for having stolen their “prime cases” in election years? Could he have been killed by someone he wrote up for absolutely nothing? Could it have been connected to the death of his son? Or could be for some other reason? And most importantly, what is the secret ingredient in the fudge cupcakes?!

urkelgif interesting hmm

bannerbooks-border-black-and-white

Thought After Reading:

So let’s start with the cupcake mystery. I first thought it was going to be annoying and distracting. Not to mention cruel to have Fluke make us wait so long to find out the answer, but it actually added to the story. It made you read more as you wanted to know what the ingredient is. And the cupcake sounds so good, I will be making them in the future.

chocolate-cupcake

Now I do hate the Mike storyline. Mike is the worst detective ever. He actually thinks that Bill, Bill who couldn’t plan his way out of a paper bag could murder Sheriff Grant? Bill is stupid, but honest. The only way he would murder anyone was on accident, turning himself in. Come on Mike, get your head out of your butt.

seriously

I mean they act like Mike is such a great detective, but he’s as dumb as rocks.

Icannotstandmorons_Laura

And it is clear that Hannah and Mike would not work long term as in every book she gets incredibly angry at him. Just break up already and get with Norman.

seriously

Shawna Lee Quinn comes to town, a recent plant and old friend of Mike. She is eager to be a new friend and is further proof that Mike is not right for Hannah. Dump that chump!

polls_dump_him_card_p1373883252529100202v3xi_328_5633_248654_answer_1_xlarge

Once again they also make Tracey act way too old.  And there is not enough Norman in here.

But on a whole I enjoyed the book. The mystery was easily solvable, once you were given all the clues, but it was a pretty good story.

Thoughts Before Cooking:

So I found this recipe on Pinterest from Cooking Classy and thought it would be great to make with my nieces and nephews. I love pumpkins and French toast. What could go wrong?

Thoughts After Cooking:

I didn’t really like it.

IDon'tlikeit

None of the ingredients blended together that well, and there wasn’t any pumpkin-y taste in it.

However, my nieces and nephews helped me make it, taking turns in whisking and mixing, so maybe that was the reason it didn’t blend as well. Maybe I should have whisked each ingredient separately. I might try again, and if I do , I will post an update.
