So this is our last Christmas recipe. It has been some fun times and I hope you have tried and enjoyed the recipes as much as I have.

So today’s recipe, I had thought about doing something Victorian, because I reviewed Charles Dickens’ mystery, but changed my mind. Instead I wanted to do a recipe I thought was really tasty.

Thoughts before cooking:

So when I was planning the Christmas reviews for this blog I kept trying to figure out what would be a good thing to end on? What was something we could all enjoy. Then I was invited to a Christmas party, and as I tried to think of what to bring, it hit me. I could do this cheese log my sister made years ago. It was the best cheese log I had ever tasted, so I signed up to bring it.

Weeks later as I searched and searched for the recipe, it turned out to be missing.

I asked my sister if she remembered what went in it or what it was called or what magazine/website she got it from. She could remember zilch.

So I combed the web searching for something, anything that seemed vaguely familiar. I sent her the recipes but she responded with a negative. None of them were right.

I found myself giving up. I had resigned myself to have to try to find something else when she found it. She found the perfect recipe. Thank goodness.

But now the question was, was it really as good as I remembered it?

Ingredients:

  • 16 Tablespoons of Chive and Onion Cream Cheese
  • 16 Tablespoons of Gorgonzola or Other Blue Cheese
  • 8 Tablespoons of Butter
  • 8 Tablespoons of Chopped Pine Nuts or Walnuts, Toasted
  • Plastic Wrap
  • Crackers

Directions:

  1. Stir together cream cheese, gorgonzola, butter, and nuts.
  2. Arrange in a one-inch diameter log.
  3. Wrap in plastic and chill for one hour or until firm.
  4. Serve with crackers of your choice

It still was as delicious and posh as I remembered. I absolutely loved it and couldn’t stop eating it.

Thoughts Before Baking:

So as I was reading the short prequel, Candy Canes of Christmas Past (from Candy Cane Murder anthology), by Leslie Meier, the main character, Lucy, just went on and on about these cookies. At first I was a little off put by the name, I mean Sand Tart? Why would you name something you want people to eat after one of the most annoying substances on Earth? But hey, what is in a name? Right?

Anyways, reading about Lucy’s love for the cookie made me really, really want to try them myself.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 Cup of Butter
  • 1 Cup of Sugar
  • 2 Beaten Egg Yolks
  • 1 Tablespoon of Milk
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Vanilla Extract
  • 1.5 Cups of Flour
  • 1 Teaspoon of Baking Powder
  • 1/2 Teaspoon of Salt
  • Almonds
  • 2 Egg Whites
  • Mixture of 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon

Directions

  1. Cream the butter.
  2. Add sugar, egg yolks, milk, & vanilla
  3. Beat mixture until light
  4. Sift together flour, baking powder, & salt.
  5. Add dry ingredients to first mixture.
  6. Chill for two hours.
  7. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  8. Roll dough out very thin and cut with a star or circle cookie cutter.
  9. Place on a buttered baking sheet and put an almond on each cookie.
  10. Brush with unbeaten egg whites and sprinkle the mixture of sugar and cinnamon.
  11. Bake for 10 mins.

Thoughts After Baking:

So I didn’t follow the recipe one hundred percent. They asked for skinless almonds, but I couldn’t find any so I want with whole ones.

This recipe was A LOT of work, but the cookies were absolutely delicious and extremely enjoyable.

I will warn you that you have to watch these cookies carefully. Because they are so thin, and you sprinkle cinnamon on them, they can get extremely dark when baked for 10 minutes. I’d give them 8 and then watch them like a hawk.

Otherwise I loved them and will gladly make them again.

Time for another holiday recipe:

Sugar Cookie Murder

So this recipe of mushrooms comes from Sugar Cookie Murder and the fictional Lake Eden Holiday Buffet Cookbook.

Thoughts Before Cooking:

I love mushrooms and these stuffed ones sounded so great that I decided they would be an excellent one to try out.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Pounds of Ground Sausage
  • 3 Cloves of Finely Chopped Garlic
  • 2 Tablespoons of Ground Sage
  • 8-oz package of Cream Cheese
  • 1 Tablespoon of Parsley
  • 1 lb of Medium to Large Mushrooms (Big enough to stuff)
  • Parmesan Cheese (to sprinkle)
  • Butter
  1. In a large, non-stick skillet, combine the sausage, garlic and sage.
  2. Sauté until sausage is browned and garlic is translucent.
  3. Drain the fat from the skillet and add softened cubed cream cheese and parsley.
  4. Simmer for 10 minutes, remove from heat, and cover.
  5. Wash mushrooms. Remove the stems and set the caps aside.
  6. Chop the stems very fine and stir into the sausage/cheese mixture.
  7. Brush caps with melted butter and arrange cap down on a non-stick baking sheet (if needed shave a bit from the bottom of the cap to make them flat).
  8. Fill each cap with a heaping mound of warm sausage mixture and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
  9. Bake at 325 degrees F. for 15 minutes.

Thoughts after cooking:

These were great! They were delicious and could make a great appetizer or mean if paired with a salad.

The cream cheese might make them a little rich for some, but I’m definitely going to make them again.

With Christmas coming, I decided that I would review Christmas mysteries and Christmas recipes! I know I am behind, and am sorry. December has barely started, and I’m already tied up. Happens every year.

Well to kick-off this Christmas-polooza, here we go with:

Sinister Sprinkles (A Donut Shop Mystery #3) by Jessica Beck

It’s Christmas time in April Springs, North Carolina. Suzanne is getting ready for the 19th Annual Winter Carnival, an even that occurs right before Christmas.

However, this year’s event falls flat as her ex-husband’s ex-mistress, Darlene is found dead.

What makes it even stranger, is that Darlene, a woman who inspires to be a Marilyn Monroe type girl, is found in another woman’s clothes; along with a wig to make her appear older.

Now Max is suspected of the murder, and Suzanne finds her life all mixed around.

Thoughts After Reading:

I did not like this book at all.

I was very disappointed as I enjoyed the last book, Fatally Frosted

I thought the storyline was not that good, and once again the cop thinks Suzanne did it, until evidence shows she couldn’t. In every book he suspects her, but is wrong. You think he would realize his stupid mistakes and move on.

The mystery was lame and easily solvable.

And this mystery has a weird feeling to it. Almost as if it is the final episode in a series. Suzanne’s boyfriend dumps her in the most horrible and stupid way. They’ve been dating for like a year and he pops out of the blue telling her he’s not over his wife. Why didn’t he mention something earlier?

Grace, Suzanne’s best friend, gets offered a job in California, one too good to turn down;

And Suzanne starts to think that having a Donut Shop was a bad idea and she should do something different.

I never get to do anything fun.

Weird to do on the third book, especially since I know there is more books coming after. But maybe the author was thinking of stopping this series and doing something else?

But of course in the end all is wrapped up with a shiny bow like a new present.

Lots of customers come which convinces Suzanne she is right with having the donut shop; Grace gets a promotion but gets to stay; and Jake comes back and begs forgiveness.

For me it is the end for a while. I was extremely disappointed with it and am taking a break from the series.

I will say there is something good about this book, there were a lot of recipes I’m thinking of trying.

Butter Berry Cookies

Thoughts before baking:

This is called Merry Berry Cookies in the mystery Candy for Christmas, but I changed the name. I’ll explain later.

So when I first read the recipe for the jelly cookie it intrigued me. Could jelly be good in a cookie? I hate it in donuts, but a cookie? Could this actually work? Could a jelly cookie be tasty?

I just had to find out.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 Cups of Butter
  • 2 Cups of White Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup of melted raspberry, blackberry, strawberry, or any berry jam
  • 2 Beaten Eggs
  • 1 Teaspoon of Baking Soda
  • 1 Teaspoon of Salt
  • 4 Cups of Flour
  • 1/3 Cup of White Sugar (for later)
  • Berry jam (for later)

Directions:

  1. Melt the butter in a large microwave-safe bowl. Add the sugar and mix it in thoroughly. Let the bowl sit on the counter while you do the next step.
  2. Melt the jam in the microwave or in a saucepan over low heat. Once it is the consistency of syrup, mix it in with the butter and sugar.
  3. Add the eggs, baking soda, and salt; stirring after each addition.
  4. Add the flour and mix thoroughly. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the dough for at least 2 hours.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  6. Roll the chilled dough into small walnut size balls. Put the 1/3 cup of sugar in a small bowl and roll the dough balls in it. Place them on a greased cookie sheet. Flatten the dough with a greased spatula. Make a small indentation with your thumb in the center of each cookie, fill indention with jam.
  7. Bake cookies for 10-12 minutes. Makes 8-10 dozen.

Thoughts after baking:

First of all, I used strawberry jelly as that was what I had the most of. And the strawberry jelly was pretty good, I wonder how it would taste with a different one.

I’m not sure I copied the recipe out right, I think the salt and baking soda proportions are off. I’m pretty sure of the baking soda as the cookies came out really flat.

After I took the dough out of the fridge, it was rock solid. I had to use an ice-cream scoop to get them out, that being the reason why they are so big.

So after all that how did they taste? They are really good, but not very fruity. In fact, they have more of a buttery taste, which is why I changed the name from Merry Berry to Butter Berry.
